NTNUI proves stronger than Oslo students
Sølve Conradi Olsen - 31. 08. 2009 17:47With the loss to Stavanger well forgotten, the team looked forward to play OSI in the first home game of the season. The team had a good week of training leading up to the match, and everybody arrived at Lade confident that this game would be ours to win.
Unfortunately the OSI had been victims to som last minute cancellations from key players. This meant that we had to help them out with some of our own. Allthough not an ideal solution the guys who were picked out certainly proved to that they could play even with OSI-jerseys.
The game kicked off and the NTNUI side immediately put pressure on OSI. The game had not lasted but a few minutes when Einar Eriksen got the ball on the wing, beat a few defenders and sprinted over the line for a try.
The NTNUI forwards, controlled the game for much of the first half. Strong rucking and powerful runs off the rucks moved the ball forward for the men in green. When the ball was played out to the backs the undisputed man of the match, Schalk Cloete, orchestrated lethal threats to the OSI defensive line.
Another three tries were scored by NTNUI before half time, and the scoreboard showed a comfortable 24-0 to the home team when the teams gathered to plan the remaining 40 minutes.
The NTNUI forwards continued to control the game, but NTNUI scrumhalf, Ben Elliot, connected more and more with the backs to stretch the OSI line. This lead to two early tries for Trondheim, one of them was scored by virgin winger Alexandre Musnier.
The game was in reality won at this point, and it was time for another four virgins to enter the pitch: Alan Femenias, Karol Kornacki, Elmar Eidelpes and Clemens Mellein. Allthough never having played a rugby game before, they all tackled hard and maintained the pack's dominance on the pitch. Karol also managed to score a try after pounding his way through a handful of defenders. The last virgin on the day, Calle Melhuus Bang, started the game at lock and he made an impressive start of his rugby career.
The OSI side suffered from the lack of players, but they never gave up. After a determined drive in the middle of the second half they pushed to the NTNUI tryline before one of their locks crashed over for 5 points.
The game came to an end after 80 minutes, and the final score was 53-5. The first real win since 2003 for a NTNUI 15s side. In this proud moment our scrumhalf pulled out a sheet of paper from his left sock. It was time for post game poetry:
Invictus
Out of the night that covers me
Black as the pit from pole to pole
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstances
I have not winced or cried aloud,
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds me, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate;
I am the captain of my soul.

...
The third half just had to be a good one. Being a clash of two student teams, there was no better place to go than Studentersamfundet...
