NTNUI fall to Bergen RK
Sølve Conradi Olsen - 28. 09. 2009 13:35For once the weather was wet and windy, conditions well known to both teams. Bergen travelled to Trondheim with a solid team to see 22 local boys ready to fight for victory against last year's runner up.
Neither of the teams stood out in the early stages of the game. Both sides clearly showed that they wanted to get on the scoreboard early, but too many times a slippery ball resultet in turnovers.
The home team didn't find the rythm on defence. Against the experienced Bergen side, this will sooner or later result in points. Exploiting a disorganized line, the Bergen backs speeded past three NTNUI backs and ran in for a try in the corner. A successful penalty kick made the score at half time 8-0 to Bergen, although the NTNUI boys felt that it was bad luck rather than a stronger opponent.
The second half started like the first, with the ball going up and down the pitch. Conor Foster got the opportunity to put the home team on the board with a penalty early in the second half, and the score was suddenly 8-3. The close battle continued, but about half way into the second half the unmistakable sign of fatigue started to appear on the men in green. When Bergen put on former NTNUI star, Peter Bautmans, they also started to control the scrums and the lineouts. Bergen kept the intensity up and managed to crash over the line 4 more times before the final whistle. The non existing scoreboard showed 3-32 at full time.
Once more the Trondheim guys saw a more experienced team beat them severely in the second half. Still, this was yet another positive game for the home team. The gap between the traditional strongholds of norwegian rugby and the steadily improving Trondheim students, is slowly closing.
With Oslo winning at home against Stavanger, NTNUI will travel to Bergen on oct 10th to play a knock out game against the very same Bergen team. The green men are looking at two weeks of quality preparations and the motivational revenge scenario...
