NTNUI's season ended by too powerful Bergen team
Sølve Conradi Olsen - 11. 10. 2009 18:50A spirited NTNUI side travelled all the way to Bergen to play for a spot in the season final. Despite giving it all, the Trondheim students could not match the powerful Bergen team in a fun and entertaining match.
NTNUI fulfilled their second goal of the season by travelling with 18 players to Bergen. For the first time in the team's history a pure NTNUI squad was in place to play the Bergen team at their home field.
The well known Bergen rain was nowhere to be seen as the two teams kicked off in bright sunlight at Fana stadium. Bergen took possession of the ball from the start and tried to break a determined Trondheim line. The pressure was at the visitors, but the line held well throughout the first half. However, lack of discipline from the green team gave the Bergen boys plenty of penalties in good position. This resulted in three successful penalties for the home team before half time. 9-0
The second half started the way the first half ended. A massive Bergen pressure on a NTNUI team that still kept their defensive line intact. NTNUI struggled to move the ball and the well organized Bergen defence
and when Bergen's flyhalf finally broke the line the game was in reality won. The fitness factor once more kicked in for the Trondheim side towards the end of the match and two more tries were put on the board. After 80 minutes Bergen had scored 32 points while the NTNUI boys never got on the scoreboard in this game. A fair result after all.
The season is over for the NTNUI team, while Bergen will take on Stavanger in the final on october 24th. The team will look back at a season where we've taken huge steps and earned the respect of our opponents by playing solid rugby. The future looks promising!
