Bergen 7's - The Report
Sølve Conradi Olsen - 26. 05. 2010 20:06The 8th of May was the day of the second stage of the Norwegian Cup, Bergen 7s. After having recruited two new girls only the week before, the NTNUi girls travelled down to Bergen with a full squad, full of expectations, and with the goal of doing better than in Horten.
Waking up on Saturday morning, Bergen showed itself from its best side with sunny and warm weather. The rendezvous was set at 10.30, so some players grabbed the opportunity to eat breakfast in Byparken alongside Jehova’s witnesses, whilst some started the day by hailing a public bus, and getting it to drive them all alone to the stadium.
First match was against the winners of Ekeberg 7s, Oslo RK. Oslo were lacking some experienced players, but still had an impressive line-up. They may however have underestimated the spirit that is to be found in our team. Where we lack in experience and training, we compensate by being enthusiastic and enjoying the game. The match turned out to be quite close, and ORK only won by one try, with the final result being 15 – 10 (Marianne and Sigrid). Our dear full back miss Speedy Babe Sigrid however got injured and shipped off to the ER room, which turned out to be the place to be for rugby players this afternoon. A fracture was feared, but Sigrid, being hard core, came back all happy with only a severely sprained hand. Playing a close match against Oslo (we actually thought we tied…) motivated the team even more for the next match.
Next up was Bergen 2. The team was a good mixture of some of the more experienced BSI-players (Kirsten, Elisabeth, Krissy...) and some new faces. As both teams were at about the same level, it was a tight and fun match (at least to play), and real physical as BSI2’s strength was more their physique than their speed. Before the match Cathinka had made the effort of jinxing herself, asking other teams for subs if ever one of us were to get injured. So when she did the smart choice of trying to step on Veteran Elisabeth’s foot, she twisted her ankle and had to go off. While lying around on the pitch feeling sorry for herself, she managed to put on such a show that the ref stopped the game, just when Marianne was about to score. Despite this, the match ended 10 – 5, with a deserved victory to NTNUi, who were now down to 6 players.
With no subs, the Trondheim babes were dreading the next opponent, the feared Bergen 1. Even with some of their more experienced players on their second team, their lineup was impressive, with many girls from the national team. With the kind help of two BSI2 players and a girl from Horten, we were a full team, but Bergen managed to exploit our weaknesses, and won 50 – 0.
The last match was where we saw our chance to get revenge. As Horten were only 6 players, the game was played as 6-a-side game. Horten knew how to take advantage of their strengths; their speed, Heidi, Tonje and Annlaug’s experience. We however managed to create some good play and scored three tries, one by each of the “veterans”; Hanna, Marianne and Cathinka (injured fat winger-style). Despite losing 25 -15, the NTNUi girls were really happy with the match.
Marianne, Hanna and Cathinka’s effort as subs for Horten in their last match should also be pointed out. Marianne played what was, according to herself, her best match of the day for Horten (good idea…), scoring at least 2 tries. After halftime and an injury on Horten’s international star Heidi, Hanna and Cathinka got sub’ed in, and managed to do such a good job (irony) that Horten lost.
As they normally do, the NTNUi girls did a great job during the third half, which was held at The Livingston. Almost all of the Trondheim girls were present, and managed to get free ice for their injuries, accompanied by free drinks, scare a swede, make new rugby friends, and have a great time. Awards were given out to the two virgins that impressed us all with their fighting spirit, Lene and Kari. Marianne got an award for scoring the most tries, and Hanna Montana received an award for being her lovely self and giving us tons of great quotes, and should therefore from now on be known as “I see space”-babe. The third half continued in different bars around town, and whilst some limped home at a more or less reasonable hour, some people found it smarted to trust people with moustaches to find their way home…
