NTNUI punished by Oslo rugbyklubb
Sølve Conradi Olsen - 31. 05. 2010 12:16Due to an ongoing strike, the game was moved to Hell for the day. The name proved to be a good description of where the game headed for the home team.
NTNUI had prepared for this game and good trainings leading up to the game had put a full squad of motivated players entering the arena on a fairly cold and rainy day in Hell.
Oslo came up with a squad of 16 players and were ready to fight for some hard earned points on the day.
When rain pours down, basic ball handling becomes tougher. Experience is key in such conditions, and this favored the Oslo side this time. While the home team struggled with basics from the start, the Oslo boys were far more confident with ball in hand.
Another aspect of rain is that it tends to find ways of leaking through roofs and similar. Not due to the rain, the home team showed that on this particular day, the defensive line leaked for a full 80 minutes. Against an experienced side like the ORK, this will be thoroughly exploited...
You know where this is heading, but the game kicked off from a Trondheim boot. ORK started banging heads with the NTNUI forwards. From early on the home pack matched the Oslo side well, but when the ball was swung out to the Oslo backline NTNUI was struggling.
An early blow to the inside center of NTNUI, Alex Musnier, a reorganization of the lineup was needed for the home team. Although Ben Fidler is a creative player, his appearance in the backline was not his preferred spot on the pitch.
Oslo showed early that they were the stronger side. Their powerful backline of ORK stretched the lighter home line throughout the game and crashing through a defence that was not ready to bring the opponent to ground when needed. The tries poured in, and the game was in reality lost by half time.
Second half continued in the same way. NTNUI proved at times that they could move the ball, but only to see basic mistakes putting them back in their own half. Frustration started to spread and heads started to hang.
The final score, 0-50, says it all. A tragic performance by the home team.
Despite being butchered at the pitch. There were some positives on the day.
- The forwards did a good job in scrums and lineouts
- Two new virgins got game time, Federico showed solid tackling skills and Simon got a few minutes in green. Simon will have to work on his award skill, though ;)
- Stein Ove threw ORK players around all day. If only that guy could sidestep!
The third half was played at 3lions and around town. As usual no reports from this part of the game...
