Last try wins?
Sølve Conradi Olsen - 07. 06. 2010 08:55After a humiliating loss to Oslo rugbyklub in Hell, it was time to restore our pride. However, for 65 minutes it was the same story over again.
NTNUI traveled to Oslo with 12 guys + Francesco. Without a full squad, but with enough players to meet the required forfeit number. Fortunately former NTNUI-star, Peter Samuel, dressed up in green. Fijian powerhouses Viliame and Joe also helped out the green forces. Veteran mercenary prop Trond Are this time joined forces with the green.
After a long drive down to Oslo, the players were eager to show that they could play better rugby than what happened in Hell the weekend before. Still, when the game kicked off it became clear that the green team still suffered from the severe blow that ORK had inflicted on NTNUI confidence.
Passive defensive organization is not the way to success in rugby. The Oslo team ran hard and pushed the NTNUI side back. Several tries were scored before half time, and it looked to be yet another sad day for the guys travelling from Trondheim.
An injury on Tim at flanker changed the lineup and NTNUI suddenly had two fijians in the backline. With them came confidence and a desire to play the ball to the backs. Allthough Oslo scored some tries in the start of the second half, the game evened out and NTNUI started pushing into Oslo territory at occasions. The Oslo defensive line held well, but confidence grew in the green side and they dared running at the white and blue wall.
With about 10 minutes remaining, NTNUI was awarded for their heroic fight. Hard running by the heavier forwards moved the ball and sent fullbacks flying. Flyhalf Jean saw space on the blind side, called out to scrum half Ruben, got the ball and easily passed the ball on to a lucky lock on the wing. For once catching the ball, Sølve could dive over the line for a try.
This was the last score of the game, and of course all NTNUI players agree that the last try won this game. The final score is somewhat uncertain. Officially it seems to be 45-5, even though everybody thought it was 55-5 after the game.
Still not happy with the performance, the boys agreed that putting points on the board and winning the last 15 minutes of the game is a step in the right direction.
